Egypt-Italy Maritime Partnership Boosts Confidence in Egyptian Engineering
Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has embarked on a landmark initiative by signing an export agreement with Italy’s NERI Group to deliver two Egyptian-built tugboats a first in Egypt’s marine export history.
The contract, witnessed by SCA Chairman Osama Rabie, was formalized between Misr Tugboats Factory, under the umbrella of the Suez Canal Company for Modern Boats, and NERI Group. Each tugboat will have a bollard pull of 90 tonnes, underlining Egypt’s advancement in modern shipbuilding and its ability to meet international standards.
Chairman Rabie calls the deal a vote of confidence in Egyptian engineering, noting that it supports the SCA’s strategic ambition to localize ship manufacturing and enhance Egypt’s presence in global marine markets. “We’re opening new paths for Egypt-built vessels to compete globally,” he said.
The vessels will follow the Rastar 3200-W design, celebrated for stability, performance, and fuel efficiency in both port and coastal operations. They are expected to be delivered to NERI Group in the first quarter of next year, marking Egypt’s transition from maritime transit power to participant in marine exports.
This agreement also paves the way for deeper industrial ties between Egypt and Italy, reinforcing the “Made in Egypt” brand and positioning Egyptian shipyards as credible players in international shipbuilding. It aligns with Egypt’s broader vision to expand export marine logistics, attract foreign investment, and build sustainable maritime infrastructure.
